Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Laverne Cox is breaking new ground for network television, says the co-creator of her new legal drama Doubt.

"Her character actually has an ongoing love story that happens through the 13 episodes," Tony Phelan said in a recent teleconference with reporters.

"I believe that Laverne is the first transgender actor who is a series regular on a network show, but I also think that this love story also is something that people haven't seen before and is fun and sexy and funny and touching and all the things that great love stories are."

Doubt airs Wednesday nights on CBS. Cox is best known for her work on Netflix's Orange is the New Black and in Fox's Rocky Horror Picture Show movie musical.
