David Morse on starring in WGN's 'Outsiders:' 'It's a very rich world'

Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The stars of Outsiders said fans of their Kentucky action-drama will get to know their characters much better in Season 2.

The WGN America series follows the Farrell family, which inhabits the hills of Appalachia and fights for survival on the fringes of society.

"Season 2 starts out in a very different place from where we ended Season 1. I find myself as bren'in and I feel like the clan is a little disintegrated. We've kind of been exploded into different areas of the world and we're all trying to make our way back up," Gillian Alexy, who plays G'Win, told reporters recently at New York Comic Con. "Season 2 really takes the time to kind of delve into each of the characters and goes a little deeper into who they are and what they are fighting for. ... Season 1 had so much going on and it moved so fast. The relationships and characters are a little more developed in Season 2."

David Morse said his character Big Foster experiences some clarity after his near-death experience at the end of Season 1.

"He's still a mess. He's still Big Foster, but it is very clear what he wants and who he loves and it is not an easy path. But I think it informs a lot of what happens between the three of us," Morse said.

What do the cast members like most about the people they play?

"That I get to be really nasty and mean, which I don't get to do a whole lot of in real life," Morse quipped.

"Actually, just, for me, personally, when I was asked to do Big Foster that's what he was, was mean and nasty and it would be very easy to -- any of these characters -- kind of just slide. Particularly when you talk about Appalachia and the clan, to do a very kind of two-dimensional character and I think the fun of this is doing characters that are not that. Taking those things and just going new and different kinds of places. It's a very rich world for all of us to be in."

"It's a lot of fun, especially as a female in the entertainment industry. Sometimes there is so much pressure to be so put-together and glamorous, and I get to play a mountain woman who is kind of wild and free and natural and that's great," Alexy added. "These are really unique characters, this is a really unique world. There's really nothing else like it on television or, at least, I've never really played this role before or seen this role, so, yeah, it's a lot of fun."

"I get to wear crazy clothes with furs and speak a made-up language. What else is there? Run around on ATVs. It's the best," remarked Ryan Hurst, who plays Little Foster.

Outsiders airs Tuesday nights on WGN America.
