LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Netflix canceled their drama series Marco Polo after two seasons. The show, which premiered in 2014, was created by John Fusco and inspired by explorer Marco Polo's years in the court of Kublai Khan.

The series, which stars Lorenzo Richelmy as Marco Polo, was an expensive endeavor. Season 1 reportedly cost $90 million.

"We want to thank and are grateful to our partners on Marco Polo from the actors, whose performances were enthralling and top-notch; to the committed producers, including John Fusco, Dan Minahan, Patrick Macmanus, and their crew, who poured their hearts into the series; and of course Harvey, David and our friends at TWC, who were great collaborators from start to finish," said Netflix VP of Original Content Cindy Holland.

Marco Polo joins other shows canceled by the popular streaming service this year, Bloodline, Lilyhammer and Hemlock Grove.
