Vaughan started his film career in the 1950s, and landed his first starring role in the 1964 movie Smokescreen. He later appeared in such films as Straw Dogs (1971), The Remains of the Day (1993) and The Crucible (1996).

Vaughan was also known for playing Harry Grout on the BBC One sitcom Porridge in the 1970s. He more recently portrayed Maester Aemon on the first five seasons of the HBO drama Game of Thrones.

"It's been an absolute privilege to have worked on it for the past five years at my time of life because it's absolutely first class," the actor said of Game of Thrones in an interview with the Sunday Post in June 2015.

"It's just grown and grown and once you're hooked, that's it," he added of the show's popularity. "People like the fact that no character is ever totally safe."

"Rest in Peace to our own Maester Aemon, Peter Vaughan, who passed away this morning at age 93. Truly an honor to have known him," Cogman tweeted.
