'Doctor Who' Christmas special will involve superhero, brain-swapping aliens

NEW YORK, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- BBC America has revealed new plot details and poster art for its Doctor Who Christmas special, The Return of Doctor Mysterio.

Starring Peter Capaldi, Matt Lucas, Justin Chatwin and Charity Wakefield, the hour-long program is to premiere on the BBC in the United Kingdom and BBC America in the United States on Dec. 25. It was written by Steven Moffat and filmed in Cardiff, Wales.

"This Christmas sees the Doctor join forces with a masked superhero for an epic New York adventure," a synopsis explained. "With brain-swapping aliens poised to attack, the Doctor and Nardole link up with an investigative reporter and a mysterious figure known only as The Ghost. Can the Doctor save Manhattan? And what will be revealed when we see behind the mask?"

The poster art shows characters played by Lucas, Wakefield and Capaldi looking shocked as a superhero flies through a skyscraper window.
