NEW YORK, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Leonardo DiCaprio -- the actor who won his Oscar for his role in The Revenant -- is executive producing an eight-hour documentary series called Frontiersmen.

The History channel announced Monday it has ordered the project from Appian Way Productions and Stephen David Entertainment.

The adventures and contributions of Daniel Boone, Lewis & Clark, Tecumseh, Davy Crocket and Andrew Jackson will be documented in the program, which press notes said "will span a formative period of American history -- the first 75 years from the post-revolutionary war colonies through the California Gold Rush."

"During these years, America went from the opportunity of land to the land of opportunity and it was a bloody struggle throughout," Paul Cabana, executive vice president and head of programming for History, said in a statement. "From Crockett to Boone, we'll tell the bold stories of these adventurous trailblazers who explored the uncharted wilderness and became the icons we know today."
