Phylicia Rashad joins 'Empire' Season 3

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The Cosby Show alum Phylicia Rashad has joined the cast of Empire Season 3.

According to Variety, Rashad has landed a recurring role on the hit music drama as new character Diana Dubois, the head of one of New York's oldest and most prominent African-American families who is also the mother of Angelo Dubois, set to be portrayed by fellow newcomer Taye Diggs.

Season 3 will explore how Diana fights to get her city councilman son into a higher political office while she clashes with series protagonists Lucious (Terrance Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson)

Rashad is also joining previously announced guest stars Sierra McClain,French Montana, Birdman and Mariah Carey who is set to appear in one episode as music superstar Kitty as she collaborates with Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) on a new song.

While most known for her role as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, Rashad has appeared in more recent television shows such as Do No Harm, Psych and Steel Magnolias.

Empire returns starting Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
