LOS ANGELES, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Former Glee star Naya Rivera is opening up for the first time about her abortion.

The 29-year-old actress, who played Santana Lopez on the Fox series, revealed in her memoir Sorry Not Sorry that she had an abortion after discovering she was pregnant with Ryan Dorsey's child during filming.

"It was very scary to open about about everything," Rivera told People after providing an excerpt from the book for the magazine's Sept. 5 issue.

"It's not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should," she said of the experience. "I know some people might read it and say, 'What the hell?' But I hope someone out there get something out of it."

Rivera, who married Dorsey in 2014, said in the memoir that she initially didn't tell the Justified actor that she had terminated the pregnancy. The couple are now parents to 11-month-old son Josey.

"I set out to write a book that was true to myself and would hopefully help others along the way," the actress tweeted Wednesday. "Media will always distort anything."
