The show, based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, follows the story of a totalitarian society known as Gilead that considers women to be property of the state and uses them as sex slaves as birthrates have plummeted.

Moss portrays lead Offred who is one of the last fertile women left and who works as a handmaid inside the home of Gilead founding father Cmdr. Fred Waterford (Finnes). As Offred battles to survive, she also begins searching for her long lost daughter who was taken away from her.

Created and written by Bruce Miller, The Handmaid's Tale will begin production in Toronto this autumn according to Empire.

This marks a return to television for Fiennes following his role on the second season of FX's American Horror Story.
