Syfy orders third season of '12 Monkeys'

LOS ANGELES, June 30 (UPI) -- Syfy has announced it renewed its time-travel drama 12 Monkeys for a 10-episode, third season.

The new episodes are expected to air in 2017. The series was co-created by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. Matalas also serves as the showrunner and executive producer.

"In two short seasons, 12 Monkeys has become a cult favorite series," Syfy's Chris McCumber said in a statement Wednesday. "Terry and the cast and crew have brought to life a rich world not confined by boundaries of time, with multi-dimensional characters whose motivations for saving the world are deeply personal and intensely relatable. It's exactly the type of smart, on-the-edge-of-your-seat entertainment we want to bring to Syfy viewers."

"This season of 12 Monkeys has proven to be a break-through. From its epic storytelling to its grand aesthetic, Terry and the cast and crew have invested boundless energy and passion, and it showed," added Jeff Wachtel, chief content officer of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and president of Universal Cable Productions. "New legions of fans will discover what devoted viewers already know: it's one of the best shows on television!"

The show stars Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, Kirk Acevedo, Emily Hampshire, Barbara Sukowa and Todd Stashwick. It follows the journey of James Cole, a man from 2043 sent back in time to stop a malevolent organization known as the Army of the 12 Monkeys from destroying the world. The series is based on the 1995 film of the same name.

Season 2 is airing on Monday nights on Syfy.
