'Lost in Space' re-boot in the works at Netflix

BEVERLY HILLS , Calif., June 30 (UPI) -- Netflix says it has ordered a 10-episode, first season of a new version of the classic 1960s series Lost in Space.

The re-boot from Legendary TV is expected to premiere via the Netflix streaming service in 2018. Zack Estrin is its showrunner and Neil Marshall is set to direct several of its hour-long episodes.

No casting has been announced yet.

Based on the beloved sci-fi drama from Irwin Allen, the new series is being reimagined by writing team Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. It will once again follow the space-traveling Robinson family, who is stranded light years from their intended destination.

"The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience. The current creative team's reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world," Cindy Holland, Netflix's vice president of original content, said in a statement Wednesday.
