Matthew McConaughey open to returning to 'True Detective': 'I miss Rust Cohle, man'

LOS ANGELES, June 23 (UPI) -- Matthew McConaughey is open to returning to HBO's anthology crime series, True Detective.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man," the actor said Wednesday of his Season 1 character while appearing on DirecTV's Rich Eisen Show. "I miss watching him on Sunday nights."

McConaughey even hinted at reaching out to True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto to discuss possibly returning. "It would have to be the right context, the right way," he said. "That thing—when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in."

The role of left the 46-year-old happy. "I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island," McConaughey explained. "Luckily my wife put up with me."

Season 2 of the series starring Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Colin Farrell, failed to have the same impact as the first season and was met with a negative response from fans and critics.

McConaughey will next be see in the upcoming film adaption of Stephen King's 1980s novel series, The Dark Tower alongside Idris Elba. The actor was confirmed to be portraying series villain Randall Flagg or the Man in Black.
