First Dates will consist of eight one-hour episodes and take place in Chicago, Ill. The show will follow several real-life first dates happening at the same restaurant in one night. Variety reported production will begin in July.

"First Dates explores the experience of a first date -- the promise of potential love when it goes well and the hilariously awkward moments if it crashes and burns," the website reported.

Ellen DeGeneres will executive produce the series through her A Very Good Production banner. The 58-year-old Ellen DeGeneres Show host was first linked to the project in spring 2015.

"Chicago is a quintessential American city," NBC late night programming president Paul Telegdy told the Chicago Tribune at the time. "We love that the people featured on these dates will be able to speak to life experiences wherever they're from."

Barrymore last appeared with Toni Collette in the romantic drama Miss You Already. The actress will star with Timothy Olyphant in the new Netflix comedy Santa Clarita Diet, which is expected to premiere in 2017.
