Max von Sydow cast in 'Game of Thrones' season 6

The actor will portray the mystical tutor who teaches Bran about skinchanging.

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Acclaimed actor Max von Sydow has joined Game of Thrones season 6.

The 86-year-old Swedish actor will replace Struan Rodger at the Three-Eyed Raven on the HBO series. The character first appeared in human form to Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the season 4 finale.

Sydow confirmed his casting after the news broke Monday, tweeting, "Proud to be joining the 'House'. :) #GameofThrones #GOT." The actor tagged co-stars Maisie Williams, Iwan Rheon, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sophie Turner and Eric Roberts in the post.

Game of Thrones is based on the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin, and will return for a sixth season in 2016. Deadwood actor Ian McShane will also appear on the new season in a yet-unspecified role.

Von Sydow is known for such films as The Seventh Seal, The Exorcist and Never Say Never Again, and last appeared in The Letters with Juliet Stevenson. The actor is also scheduled for Santos and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
