NEW YORK, July 6 (UPI) -- Jeffrey Dean Morgan has joined The Good Wife as a series regular.

The 49-year-old actor will portray a new investigator on season 7 of the CBS drama following Archie Panjabi's departure. The 43-year-old actress portrayed Kalinda Sharma for six seasons and revealed she will not return in October 2014.

'We've loved and admired Jeffrey Dean Morgan for years, and we were thrilled to hear that Julianna [Margulies] did too, so it was a no-brainer to ask him to join our troupe," executive producers Robert and Michelle King said in a press release.

The Good Wife stars Margulies as lawyer and aspiring politician Alicia Florrick, and was renewed for a seventh season in May. Panjabi exited amid rumors of a feud with Margulies, and later addressed speculation she and the actress filmed their season 6 finale scene separately.

Morgan is known for portraying John Winchester on The CW series Supernatural and Denny Duquette on ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and currently plays J.D. Richter on CBS series Extant. He also appeared in Watchmen and The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe.
