HOLLYWOOD, May 6 (UPI) -- Fox has passed on renewing The Mindy Project for a fourth season, though Hulu has agreed to sign on the critically acclaimed comedy series from Mindy Kaling, sources familiar with the deal said said.

Fox canceled the series, which was created by and stars Kaling, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The series, while popular with critics, has had steady but mediocre ratings. For the 2014-15 season, the comedy had a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.9 million viewers.

It's done better on streaming platforms, which is why Hulu is likely picking up the series for two seasons, sources told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I just think there are more stories," Kaling told The Hollywood Reporter in March amid rumors Fox might ditch the series. "I do think there's more to tell, and I think fans would be disappointed not to see more adventures with these characters. But I came from a show [The Office] that I was on for eight seasons, and it continued for another year after that, so I am accustomed to long runs of television shows. I would be up for that challenge."
