BEVERLY HILLS , Calif., April 26 (UPI) -- Starz says production has begun in New Zealand on the first, 10-episode season of its new series Ash vs. Evil Dead.

"Ash is back - Production has started on #AshvsEvilDead! #GROOVY," the cable television network tweeted, alongside a photo of Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell -- the original masterminds of the franchise.

The trio is producing the half-hour series with Craig DiGregorio, who will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Raimi is directing the first episode, which he wrote with DiGregorio, Ivan Raimi and Tom Spezialy.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is the followup to the classic horror film franchise The Evil Dead. It is set to premiere on Starz this fall and will feature Campbell, Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo and Jill Marie Jones.

Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, "the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead," a news release said. "When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons -- personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its 'Evil' grip."
