NEW YORK, April 21 (UPI) -- Tracy Chapman recently wowed fans with her cover of "Stand by Me."

The 51-year-old singer performed a downtempo version of the Ben E. King hit on Late Show with David Letterman. Chapman is among the final musical acts to appear on the CBS series before Letterman airs his final episode May 20.

"Stand by Me" debuted as a single in 1961, and was subsequently released on King's third studio album, Don't Play That Song!, in 1962. The track was also used as the theme song for Rob Reiner's 1986 film of the same name.

Chapman is known for such hits as "Fast Car" and "Give Me One Reason," and released her eighth studio album, Our Bright Future, in 2008. Fellow singer Kelly Clarkson covered the latter track for Sirius XM radio in March.
