LOS ANGELES, April 17 (UPI) -- British actor Dominic Cooper is set to play Jesse Custer in the small-screen, comic-book adaptation Preacher, producer Seth Rogen announced via Twitter Friday.

"We have Jesse Custer! @dominiccoop is gonna save our souls. #Preacher," Rogen tweeted.

The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed by Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin. Rogen and Goldberg will produce the project through their Point Grey banner, along with Neal Moritz's Original Film.

The pilot was written by Catlin, and Rogen and Goldberg are attached to direct it this summer. It will then be up for series consideration for 2016.

When the project was announced late last year, Custer was described as "a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says." Cooper's credits include Mamma Mia!, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer, Captain America: The First Avenger and Dracula Untold.
