The show takes place in 1980 Long Island, N.Y., as a young boy vanishes.

"As friends, family, and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces, and one very strange little girl. Montauk is a love letter to the 80s classics that captivated a generation," a synopsis said.

No casting has been announced yet.

"Matt and Ross are emerging filmmakers with an unmistakable passion for genre and suspense. Their unique voice infuses this coming-of-age drama with supernatural thrills that will captivate our global audience," Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix, said in a statement Thursday.

The Duffer Brothers recently directed their first feature film Hidden for Warner Bros. They are writing and directing the Netflix series and will serve as executive producers along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via their 21 Laps entertainment banner.
