ATLANTA, March 30 (UPI) -- The tense, fifth-season finale of the zombie-apocalypse drama The Walking Dead featured several close calls and plenty of bloodshed, however no major characters met their ends, much to the relief of fans.

"That is how you end a season. I think [this] may be the best finale of The Walking Dead," Chris Hardwick said as he kicked off his analysis program Talking Dead immediately after the other show ended.

"We've been reunited with a long-lost friend, who has apparently spent time at the Jedi Academy, which was amazing! We saw courageous acts of forgiveness, daring rescues, savage slayings, an army of walkers led by the Wolves, who lurk just outside the walls [of the sanctuary Alexandria.]"

The 90-minute episode featured the return of fan favorite Morgan, played by Lennie James, who rescued Norman Reedus' Daryl and Ross Marquand's Aaron from a car that was surrounded by zombies, while they were out scouting for supplies and potential new members for their safe community.

Back at the development where the rest of the survivors live, alcoholic surgeon and wife beater Pete [played by Corey Brill] lunges at Andrew Lincoln's troubled constable Rick with a sword, killing sensible, kind-hearted Reg instead. Reg's wife Deanna, the leader of the community, then orders Rick to shoot Pete, which he does without hesitation, just as Daryl and Aaron arrive on the scene with Morgan, the first friend Rick made after the apocalypse.
