Eddie Murphy returns to 'Saturday Night Live' after 30-year hiatus

Murphy, 53, joined the "SNL" cast in 1981 and was a series regular until 1984.

NEW YORK, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Eddie Murphy will appear in Saturday Night Live for the first time in 30 years on Feb. 15 for the late-night comedy show's 40th anniversary special.

Murphy, 53, joined the SNL cast in 1981 when he was 19 years old. He last appeared on the show in 1984, before going off to pursue a career in film.

"It just never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it," the comedian told News One Now about the hiatus. "They're having a 40th anniversary. I'm going to that. And that will be the first time I've been back since I left."

During his time on SNL Murphy coined numerous characters including Mister Robinson's Neighbor, Might Buckwheat and Gumby. There is still no word on whether his reprise his old roles during his visit to the show.

The SNL 40th anniversary special will air on NBC.
