LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Fox may develop a live-action X-Men television series.

Entertainment chairman Gary Newman revealed the news in an interview with TV Insider. The network has reportedly discussed the project with Marvel, and would base the show on the original 1963 comics and subsequent movie franchise.

"It's in negotiations," he said, adding the program would likely not be ready before 2016-2017. "We're cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative."

24 producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto are rumored as showrunners for the series, and would co-create the project with Star Trek 3 writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. McKay and Payne would also pen the show.

Marvel developed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter at ABC, and has Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage series in the works at Netflix. 20th Century Fox retains the film rights to X-Men characters, but the comic is owned by Marvel, which is aligned with Disney.
