'Late Show with Stephen Colbert' to premiere Sept. 8

"I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby. So first, I should find out how you make a baby," Colbert said Monday.

NEW YORK, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is to premiere Sept. 8, CBS announced Monday.

David Letterman, who has served as host of the program for 21 years, revealed his intention to retire on the April 3, 2014 edition of the show. As previously announced, his final broadcast will air May 20.

Colbert was named Letterman's successor on April 10, 2014. The show will continue to be taped in New York.

"The production office is open, the premiere date is set, and we're incredibly excited to welcome the creative and comedic genius of Stephen Colbert to CBS late night this fall," Nina Tassler, chairman of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement.

"I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby. So first, I should find out how you make a baby," said Colbert.
