LOS ANGELES, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Michael Pitt, who played wealthy villain Mason Verger on Hannibal, has decided not to return for the third season of NBC's serial killer drama.

The actor will be replaced by Joe Anderson, TV Line reported, noting the switch should go smoothly since Verger was greatly disfigured at the end of Season 2 and will look quite different when the show returns next year.

The decision to leave the series reportedly was Pitt's, but no reason has been given for his departure.

Based on characters created by novelist Thomas Harris, the show stars Mads Mikkelsen as the titular murderer, brilliant psychiatrist and gourmet cook, and Hugh Dancy as the troubled FBI agent tasked with bringing him to justice.
