Production on the program is to begin next year in Los Angeles, with series creator Ryan Murphy helming the first episode.

Kardashian was Simpson's close friend and a member of his legal team during his 1995 double-murder trial. He eventually was acquitted of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, however he was determined in a subsequent civil trial to be responsible for their deaths.

Simpson, 67, is behind bars for an unrelated armed robbery and kidnapping conviction. He is eligible for parole in 2017.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is to play the former football great in the FX miniseries, while Sarah Paulson will portray prosecutor Marcia Clark.

Kardashian died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59. He was the ex-husband of Kris Jenner and father of their reality TV star daughters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian.

Schwimmer, 48, is best known as one of the stars of the classic television sitcom Friends. He also lends his voice to the giraffe character Melman in the Madagascar movies.
