Karl Stefanovic wears same suit for a year to point out sexism in the media

CANBERRA, Australia, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Australian morning show host Karl Stefanovic wore the same suit for one entire year to test if viewers would react the same the way they do when his female co-host Lisa Wilkinson dons outfits or hairstyles the public dislikes, and funny enough -- no one noticed.

Stefanovic and Wilkinson opened up about the experiment during Monday's episode of Autralia's Today show where they discussed sexism in the media.

"No one has noticed; no one gives a [expletive]," Stefanovic told Australian news site The Age. "But women, they wear the wrong color and they get pulled up. They say the wrong thing and there's thousands of tweets written about them."

Stefanovic said he received no feedback on his "Burberry knock-off" suit, but instead was "judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humor -- on how I do my job, basically."

"Whereas women are quite often judged on what they're wearing or how their hair is ... that's [what I wanted to test]," he admitted.

Stefanovic's remarks and the results from his experiment echo the comments made by Wilkinson at an Olle Media Lecture in 2013 where she said in this day and age, a woman's talent comes second to her looks.

"Today, so often it seems, the old combo of talent, a love of words and the power to communicate powerfully are not always enough," she said last year. "What you wear can sometimes generate a bigger reaction than even any political interview you ever do."
