Alan Cumming speaks out about Shia LaBeouf's 'Cabaret' meltdown

"We've all done things where we've been out of it and messed up, but not everyone has to deal with it on such a worldwide scale. I thought he made a very good recovery and he did say the reason he did it was because I was the sexiest man he'd ever seen," Cumming said of LaBeouf.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Scottish actor Alan Cumming said on Monday's edition of Conan that Shia LaBeouf was "wasted" the night he was arrested at a performance of Cumming's Broadway musical Cabaret.

LaBeouf spent a night in jail last June after the incident, then sought treatment for alcohol addiction soon after and pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct last month.

LaBeouf has been discussing the episode while promoting his new film Fury, which was No. 1 at the North American box office when it opened last weekend.

Asked about the other actor's mea culpa, Cumming graciously told host Conan O'Brien, "He explained it last week and I thought that was a very good thing."

"He was just wasted and he was wasted from the second he walked into the thing," Cumming recalled. "So, there was an atmosphere... When I went to go down onstage to start the show, everyone's freaking out because there was somebody who seemed to be a crazy person shouting and stuff."

The Tony Award-winning actor went on to say LaBeouf further disrupted the evening by smoking, which is prohibited inside the theater, and even "whacked' Cumming on the backside when he walked through the audience as part of the show.

"I thought when he did that thing last week..." Cumming said, referring to LaBeouf's high-profile explanation. "We've all done things where we've been out of it and messed up, but not everyone has to deal with it on such a worldwide scale. I thought he made a very good recovery and he did say the reason he did it was because I was the sexiest man he'd ever seen."
