LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A Marley & Me sequel television series is in the works at NBC.

The network has given a put-pilot commitment to a single-camera comedy inspired by the 2008 film of the same name. Director David Frankel will return to helm the pilot, with Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City) as writer and Frankel, Bicks and Karen Rosenfelt as executive producers.

Marley & Me is based on John Grogan's memoir of the same name, and stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as John and Jenny Grogan. The film follows the couple as they prepare for parenthood by adopting and raising a yellow lab puppy named Marley.

The television series is set a few years after Marley's death, and will see the characters return to Florida with their three children, ages 6, 13 and 16. The family takes in a puppy who shows up at their doorstep, and the dog proves as willful and wonderful as Marley.

Marley & Me grossed over $242 million at the box office, and brought in an additional $70 million in U.S. DVD sales.
