'Black Sails' is renewed for a third season

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Black Sails has been green-lit for a third season, Starz announced Saturday.

Created by Jonathan Steinberg and Robert Levine, and executive produced by Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, the series is set 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic pirate tale Treasure Island. It follows the adventures of Captain Flint, the most feared buccaneer of the day, played by Toby Stephens.

Co-starring Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy and Zach McGowan, the 10-episode second season of the high-seas drama is to premiere on the cable network Jan. 24.

"The incredible world that Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine have created continues to unfold in Season 2. Flint's journey is riveting, and around him, Jon and Robert have woven an intricate web of conflict, betrayal, and redemption for the other characters that we believe will keep fans of the show coming back for more," Carmi Zlotnik, managing director of Starz, said in a statement. "We think that Season 3 will bring even more of the drama and lore that has made it a hit both in the U.S. and internationally."
