DUBLIN, Ireland, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Colin Farrell said he's joining the cast of True Detective for the HBO series' second season.

"I'm doing the second series. I'm so excited," he told Ireland's Sunday World.

"I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot. I know very little about it, but we're shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great," he added. "It means I get to stay at home and see the kids."

Farrell is set to play a no-nonsense California sheriff in the mystery series.

HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo said the second season of the series won't be as dark as the first, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The first season was nominated for five Emmys and won one for Outstanding Director for Cary Fukunaga.
