2014 Emmy nominations: 'Game of Thrones,' 'Fargo' lead the field

The first Emmy Awards ceremony was held at the Hollywood Athletic Club in 1949.

LOS ANGELES, July 10 (UPI) -- The 2014 Emmy nominees were announced Thursday morning.

The annual awards show honors achievements in American primetime television. The ceremony is separate from the Daytime Emmy Awards, which honors programs that air between 2 a.m. and 6 p.m.

HBO's Game of Thrones is this year's most nominated series, with 19 nominations in categories such as Outstanding Drama Series, Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Writing in a Drama Series. Fargo and American Horror Story: Coven are close behind with 18 and 17 nominations, respectively.

Given the eligibility period of June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014, Breaking Bad, which came to a close on September 29 last year, is honored as well. Bryan Cranston is up for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Walter White, with co-star Aaron Paul nominated for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Jesse Pinkman.
