NEW YORK, July 8 (UPI) -- Rosie O'Donnell may return to co-host The View.

The 52-year-old television personality is in "active negotiations" to rejoin the program, according to TMZ. The news comes in the wake of creator and co-host Barbara Walters' retirement in May and the June departure of co-hosts Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy.

O'Donnell joined the daytime talk show as a panelist in 2006, but left after one season when her contract expired. She is said to be discussing salary and other terms with execs, and is "definitely interested" in coming back if the right compensation is offered.

The View premiered in 1997 with Walters, Joy Behar, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos and Meredith Vieira as original hosts. The series has seen many personnel changes over its seventeen seasons; other former co-hosts include Lisa Ling and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Whoopi Goldberg, who joined the program in 2007, is the only host confirmed for future seasons.
