The Lion Guard follows Kion, the son of The Lion King's Simba and Nala. Kion and other animals team up to form the Lion Guard in order to protect the kingdom from threats like hyenas.

"It's kind of like The Lion King meets The Avengers," Disney Junior general manager Nancy Kanter tells the Wall Street Journal.

The Lion King was released in 1994, and is the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated feature of all time. The movie earned over $987 million at the box office, and inspired a Broadway production that has earned over $1 billion. Disney CEO Robert Iger formed the idea for the spinoff as a way to mark the movie's 20th anniversary.
