LOS ANGELES, May 9 (UPI) -- Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller announced via Twitter Friday the drama has been renewed for a third season.

"#HANNIBAL SEASON 3 IS OFFICIAL," he tweeted.

The visually stunning series stars Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lector, a brilliant psychiatrist and secret murderer, working with the FBI, ostensibly to catch serial killers. Hugh Dancy plays Will Graham, a gifted criminal profiler, while Laurence Fishburne plays FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Jack Crawford.

Based on Thomas Harris' best-selling novels, the series is the prequel to the story that began with the books and feature films Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs.
