LOS ANGELES, April 22 (UPI) -- Ellen DeGeneres will produce her own series, Ellen's Design Challenge, on HGTV.

The 56-year-old star has served as host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show since 2003, but the new series will be her first on cable television. Ellen's Design Challenge is scheduled for a six-episode run and will be accompanied by a six-part online companion series.

The show will follow six contestants as they design and build furniture with the help of a carpenter. Each contestant has 24 hours to complete their project.

"I'm so excited about this show because I love finding really special pieces of furniture," DeGeneres says. "One time I found a beautiful one-of-a-kind armoire that spoke to me in a way I'd never experienced."

"It turned out there was a drifter living inside of it," she jokes. "But that's a story for another time."

DeGeneres' production company, A Very Good Production, will produce the series alongside A. Smith & Co. in association with Telepictures. Ellen's Design Challenge will debut on HGTV some time in 2015.
