'Gilligan's Island' professor, Russell Johnson, dies

SEATTLE, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- "Gilligan's Island" star Russell Johnson died of natural causes at his home in Washington state Thursday, his agent said. He was 89.

Johnson is best known for playing the professor on the classic sitcom, which co-starred Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise and Dawn Wells. It ran from 1964 to 1967 and remains popular in reruns.

Louise and Wells are the last surviving members of the cast.

Johnson TV gust star credits include "Dallas," "The Twilight Zone" and "Outer Limits."

Among his film credits are "Column South," "Tumbleweed," "Ride Clear of Diablo," "For Men Only," "Loan Shark," "It Came from Outer Space," "This Island Earth," "Attack of the Crab Monsters," "The Space Children," "Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki" and "Three Days of the Condor."
