LOS ANGELES, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- British actor Idris Elba is to be presented with a humanitarian award at next month's BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards ceremony.

The announcement was made Tuesday by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles.

Elba is the star of TV's "Luther," and the films "Pacific Rim" and "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom." His charitable work off-set includes his involvement with the Prince's Trust, Staying Alive Foundation and supporting causes related to AIDS and HIV, at-risk/disadvantage youths, children, health and education.

"Idris Elba has used his success in film and television to turn the spotlight towards a very deserving cause. His work with the Prince's Trust for disadvantaged youth is highly commendable and in complete accord with BAFTA Los Angeles' own work in the inner city," Gary Dartnall, chairman of BAFTA Los Angeles, said in a statement.

Actor and comedian Rob Brydon is to serve as host of the Nov. 9 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards presentation at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The program will air Nov. 10 on BBC America.

"We're really delighted that Rob will be hosting this year's Britannia Awards. Rob has brought TV viewers wonderful performances over the years and is probably best known in the United States from his roles in the hit comedies 'Marion and Geoff' and 'Gavin & Stacey.' As one of the most diverse and respected comic actors in the United Kingdom, we are thrilled Rob will bring his wonderful Brit wit to the evening," Rebecca Segal and Deborah Kolar, co-chairwomen of Britannia Awards, said in a joint statement Tuesday.
