NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The finale of the New Mexico-set drug drama "Breaking Bad" was seen by 10.3 million viewers, AMC announced.

Sunday's number was a ratings record for the series, which starred Bryan Cranston as Walter White, a cancer-stricken chemistry teacher who becomes a meth dealer to support his family after his impending death.

"'Breaking Bad' is simply unique," Charlie Collier, AMC president, said in a statement Monday. "It all starts with [show creator] Vince Gilligan who really only ever asked for one thing -- the opportunity to end the show on his own terms. That is exactly what Vince did last night and, as always, brilliantly so. Congratulations to Vince and to every single person involved in this remarkable journey. We're proud that AMC will forever be known as the birthplace and home of this iconic show and, at the same time, we tip our Heisenberg hat to the fans who made this a truly shared experience."

Heisenberg is a reference to the pseudonym White uses in the drug trade.

"Breaking Bad' won the Emmy last month for best drama series.
