NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. cable network Syfy announced Monday it has ordered a drama series pilot based on the 1995 film "12 Monkeys," which was directed by Terry Gilliam.

The 60-minute, cast-contingent pilot is being produced by Universal Cable Productions and Atlas Entertainment, the producer of the original Bruce Willis-Brad Pitt theatrical movie.

The pilot "follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race," a synopsis said.

Production is to begin in November with Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who wrote the pilot script, serving as co-executive producers.

No casting has been announced yet.
