LOS ANGELES, July 11 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Sean Astin has signed on to star in "The Strain," a vampire pilot Guillermo del Toro is directing for FX, executive producer Carlton Cuse said.

"We are thrilled to have the amazing Sean Astin join the cast of THE STRAIN," Cuse tweeted Tuesday.

Starring Corey Stoll, Kevin Durand, Mia Maestro, Richard Sammel, Lauren Lee Smith, Jonathan Hyde, Miguel Gomez and John Hurt, the pilot is based on a trilogy of novels Cuse co-wrote with Chuck Hogan.

"In FX's drama series pilot 'The Strain,' Sean Astin has been cast in the role of CDC team administrator Jim Kent, the third member of the Canary Team triumvirate along with Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) who are charged with solving and containing the mysterious strain of vampirism that is sweeping over Manhattan," EW.com quoted a synopsis as saying.

Astin's film credits include "The Goonies" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Cuse is best known as writer-producer of the TV adventure drama "Lost," and the current A&E series "Bates Motel."
