'Waltons' actor Joe Conley dead at 85

LOS ANGELES, July 10 (UPI) -- Actor Joe Conley has died at a care facility in the Thousand Oaks community of Newbury Park, Calif., said Louise, his wife of 44 years. He was 85.

Best known for playing general store owner Ike Godsey on all nine seasons of the CBS family drama "The Waltons," as well as in six reunion TV movies, the New York native died Sunday after a battle with dementia, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The former child radio star took classes and starred in plays at Loyola University and Arizona State, and served in the Korean War.

He began his screen career in the 1950 film "The Sound of Fury," and also appeared in the movies "Crime of Passion," "Blueprint for Robbery" and "Cast Away."

His television credits include "Mister Ed," "The People's Choice," "Lassie," "Make Room for Daddy," "Dragnet," "Wanted: Dead or Alive," "Dennis the Menace," "Gunsmoke" and "Green Acres."

Conley is survived by his wife and children -- Kevin, Julie, Erin and Jana, The Hollywood Reporter said.
