NEW YORK, June 21 (UPI) -- U.S. actress Whoopi Goldberg is to star in and produce a small-screen adaptation of Terry McMillan's book "A Day Late and a Dollar Short," Lifetime announced.

Production is to begin this summer for a 2014 premiere.

"Terry McMillan is one of America's most beloved writers and 'A Day Late and a Dollar Short' combines her signature emotional storytelling with the complex characters viewers identify with and love. We are thrilled to be working again with Whoopi Goldberg, who will be emptying her enormous talents both in front of and behind the camera," Lifetime General Manager Rob Sharenow said in a statement Friday.

Goldberg previously produced the Lifetime series "Strong Medicine" and starred in a movie based on McMillan's novel "How Stella Got Her Groove Back."
