LOS ANGELES, June 4 (UPI) -- U.S. actor-screenwriter Justin Theroux is to play a police chief in HBO's post-apocalyptic drama pilot "The Leftovers," EW.com reported.

Peter Berg is directing the small-screen adaptation of Tom Perrotta's novel, which was written and produced by Damon Lindelof, who previously worked on the supernatural series "Lost."

"The Rapture happens. But not quite like it's supposed to. This is the story of the people who didn't make the cut... and a world that will never be the same," EW.com quoted a synopsis of "The Leftovers" as saying.

Theroux is engaged to film star Jennifer Aniston. He has played recurring roles on TV's "Parks and Recreation" and "Six Feet Under," and appeared in the films "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," "Zoolander," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," "Miami Vice" and "Broken English."
