'Doctor Who' to return for eighth season

LONDON, May 19 (UPI) -- The current version of "Doctor Who" will return for an eighth season with actor Matt Smith, who has played the Doctor since 2010, producer Steven Moffat said.

Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer, told the BBC he has begun planning the season's plot.

Brian Minchin will join Moffat as a producer for the eighth season, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The current season has recently wrapped up, ahead of the show's 50th anniversary celebration special, which will air Nov. 23.

The 3D special starts Smith, Jenna Coleman, David Tennant and John Hurt.
