May 14, 2013 at 8:30 AM

LONDON, May 14 (UPI) -- British soap opera star William Roache appeared at Preston Magistrates' Court in London and denied recent allegations he raped a 15-year-old girl in 1967.

Roache, 81, has been a cast member of TV's "Coronation Street" since the series began in 1960.

The actor was arrested May 1 and charged with two counts of rape after a woman came forward and said he sexually assaulted her when she was a youth.

ITV has said Roache will not appear on the show until legal proceedings are complete.

He is due back in court June 10, the BBC said.
