Report: MTV cancels 'Buckwild' after star Shain Gandee's death

LOS ANGELES, April 10 (UPI) -- MTV has no plans to resume production on Season 2 of its rural West Virginia-set reality series "Buckwild," The Hollywood Reporter said.

Shooting on the show was shut down after 21-year-old cast member Shain Gandee died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning during an off-roading mishap April 1.

At the time of Gandee's death, Danny Jones -- the mayor of Charleston, W. Va. -- urged the cable television network to cancel its popular series "Buckwild," stating "the show only enhanced the negative stereotype the Kanawha Valley already has."

The Hollywood Reporter said MTV considered going forward with a second season after Gandee's death, but ultimately decided to cancel the show to avoid any potential controversy, as well as to recognize Gandee as the heart of the show.

MTV did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the story, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.
