LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- The American Film Institute said Monday "Argo," "Django Unchained," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Lincoln" made its list of the best films of 2012.

Also ranked among the year's outstanding movies are "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Les Miserables," "Life of Pi," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Zero Dark Thirty."

AFI also recognized exceptional work on the small screen. Its list of the best TV programs of 2012 includes "American Horror Story," "Breaking Bad," "Game Change," "Game of Thrones," "Girls," "Homeland," "Louie," "Mad Men," "Modern Family" and "The Walking Dead."

"AFI Awards celebrates America's storytellers as collaborators," Bob Gazzale, AFI's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "We are honored to bring together artists as a community, without competition, to acknowledge the gifts they have given the world in 2012."
