LOS ANGELES, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A third season of AMC's moody, Seattle-set murder mystery "The Killing" is in the works, Variety reported.

Starring Mireille Enos, Billy Campbell and Joel Kinnaman, the show's second season wrapped last June with low ratings but a devoted fan-base.

The cable network initially said it had no plans to air a third season, but ultimately decided to give it another try after Netflix showed interest in sharing the costs of production, Variety said.

The show is expected to return in late May; however, it is unclear whether the stars will also be back or if new characters will be introduced.
