LOS ANGELES, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Oprah Winfrey announced she had a cancer scare last month, but offered few details to those gathered at an Oprah Magazine event in Los Angeles.

The New York Times said Monday the 58-year-old media mogul surprised the largely female audience in mid-October by revealing how she thought the week before she might have breast cancer.

Winfrey assured the crowd it was a false alarm; however, her best friend, broadcast journalist Gayle King, who was with her, became visibly upset, the newspaper said.

An unidentified woman in the audience reportedly chided Winfrey for not telling King the news ahead of time, but it was unclear whether Winfrey apologized, E! News said.
